Who isn’t a fan of relaxation products? I love to indulge in all things and lifestyle changes that translate into a healthier, relaxed, and more peaceful version of myself. As an avid relaxation seeker, my sleeping routine is no different. Add a little luxury in the mix and I. AM. IN. SO… when I came across the gorgeous holistic silk mask infused with lavender, I could not hold back. My impulsivity to purchase aesthetically pleasing things that are reminiscent of being in a spa (with the added bonus of being at home) took over. The only difficult choice was which color mask would end up gracing my face during the late hours of the night.
Although I own another silk mask with dried lavender flowers and a few other cotton ones, I have to admit that this one is my new favorite mask. I made the video above to provide detailed information regarding its fit, functionality, and look in case you are interested in purchasing it, but have some questions. In the video, you’ll see the Shhh silk pillow case and scented linen sprays I have been using for years and recommend. I am in no way affiliated with any of the companies or products in the video nor am I being compensated in any way. I just want to share my honest opinion on products I love.

As hurricanes, Irma and Maria, unleashed their devastation throughout my beloved island of Puerto Rico, I’m filled with emotions that touch down deep within my soul. It is the inexplicable feeling that overcomes one’s senses reminding us of how vulnerable we all truly are. I contemplate while viewing the images of murky, water currents flowing through what normally would be lively and busy roads. I can’t help, but think of the amazing people and the spirit that this island possesses. I’m soon reminded of all the memories I can draw upon from my childhood years, yearly vacations, and the four years I returned to study medicine where the island again, for a short time, became my home.
There is so much strength, beauty, love, and faith in this tiny island and it is easily reflected within its people. As I think of those affected by the hurricane, I wonder how my friends and family are fairing during this difficult time. There is no way to communicate with them at this moment to find out if they are safe. Last time I spoke with my eighty-two year old aunt (and role model), she was doing what she does best, helping others. I talked to her to find out if she could host a couple of American tourists who were stranded on the island after the airport was closed a week ago. At first, she seemed distracted and I asked her what she was doing. She responded, “delivering sandwiches for people to eat.”
She and my cousins own a bakery, La Viequense, in San Juan known for its incredibly tasty bread. Anyone who knows my aunt is familiar with her immense sense of charity. It is almost innate in her DNA. As expected, she immediately accepted to help the tourists as she delivered food to those who were in need. My mother informed me another day that my aunt was providing police officers on the streets with gallons of water to ensure they remained adequately hydrated. This is the type of example that gives me courage and hope to believe that we are all capable of becoming better versions of ourselves. These difficult times allow us to reconnect with genuine affection for others and draw out our sense of responsibility toward our neighbors. Our egos and superficial needs take a backseat to what ultimately matters most, love and kindness.
In Texas, people are grappling with the effects of Harvey while those in Florida contend with the aftermath of Irma. Meanwhile, in Mexico, an earthquake has decimated and killed over two hundred people. Children are trapped in a school building while efforts get underway to save those who they are able to find. As for natural disasters, there is not a whole lot that can be done to prevent them. However, there are currently many others suffering due to the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar while President Kim Jong-un in North Korea does not seem to care about the ramifications of his actions against his people as he foolishly taunts our country and allies. Without engaging in a political discussion, sometimes there is just no right answer and I watch from afar feeling like my hands are tied.
Unfortunately, there have always been and always will be difficult times. However, it is up to us to use the examples of fortitude these tragedies bring forth and to always choose to rise to a level where our actions are congruent to those of our ideals. Let us see one another in a different light starting today. Let’s continue to uphold our old-fashioned values of respecting and caring for those who cross our life’s path. Even though my family is at the mercy of these current events, I have faith that some unsung heroes will surface and provide the much needed aid the beautiful island of Puerto Rico and its people deserve.
I pray that my family is well and for the safety of all victims enduring life’s tragedies. I’m certain that people will continue to band together and this will one day become a faded memory replaced by much happier times. Until then, please donate to relief efforts if you can and remember that every little bit counts. May all affected by these current events find strength in one another because at the end of the day, that is all we have.
September 23, 2017 Update:
I would like to add that since I posted this article, my family and friends are safe. Here are some reliable links for organizations if you’re interested in donating:
My favorite season to decorate is Fall. I know it sounds a bit cliché, but as I write this, I’m taking in the most beautiful scenery in front of my kitchen nook.

On a daily basis, I get to witness the changing colors outside my window. It is a gorgeous, colorful escape and it’s no wonder that this process inspires so much creativity as nature becomes our muse.

I prefer to feature the season with pumpkins in different shapes, colors, and sizes to create visual interest. This season I added less expected colors from the customary varying shades of orange and played up different pops of colors throughout the room.

This color palette consists of blue, orange, and white to draw the eye primarily on the main featured work of art in the living room, the Venice canvas painting. I made sure to keep the mantle decor neutral to avoid distraction from this focal point. As you can see, the shades of blue in these pumpkins blend into the adjacent, small piece of artwork on the mantle. The beige pumpkin adds warmth, an organic element in the display, and grounds the neutral overall tone of this look.

After some careful and detailed planning, one can create a decorative space resembling the outdoor foliage hues that are indicative of the beautiful Autum season. Sitting in my living room, I feel like I’ve successfully created the outdoor/indoor feeling of Fall within the confines of my home. I can almost sense the crisp air and long for a cup of hot apple cider or pumpkin spiced latte. More importantly, I’ve accomplished to display a look that depicts my sense of self and style. Don’t be afraid to show the world exactly who you are. I can honestly say that my creative, warm, and playful personality have truly come through in this space making me long for the joys this season provides while I spend time with those I love. I hope this inspires some original ideas for your home. Please feel free to comment or write me with any decor questions you may have. Cheers!
Bathroom decor can take many directions. It can be simple or more complicated (ie. adding shelves, built-ins for towels, and accessories, etc). However, creating a unique look for your bathroom vanity doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. One can purchase a few decorative items and make a simple statement that defines one’s style. The days of old-fashioned potpourri disappeared long ago and one can find many great scents and visually pretty styles to help with the look and theme of your bathroom. In this case, I chose the pink peony scent from Potter Barn because it’s reminiscent of spring down to the details of the potpourri itself. This particular scent includes seeds, leaves, and pink flowers. It, also, smells amazing! When selecting potpourri, just make sure everyone’s allergies are accounted for within the home.
How I created this look
I purchased a clear rectangular plate from a local store for about $3 after it met the width requirements for my bathroom soap and lotion containers. I knew this was going to be the base in which these bathroom essentials would sit on just to keep in line with the clear look of the dispensers. I wanted to add an organic, natural look to the display so I added some decorative river stones and dispersed the potpourri on top to complete the look. The soap and lotion containers are nestled between the stones for stability and for a cohesive look. I used the K. Hall Design soap and lotion in the milk scent sold at Pottery Barn. The style is simple and easy to combine with different looks since the label is gray and white. This is one of my favorites, but they have a variety to choose from such as roses, oranges, grapefruit, and jasmine amongst many others.
Once the main look was complete, I added a picture frame I had laying around my home that fit the color scheme I was aiming for in this case. I found an image online that fit the theme best and printed it on glossy photo paper. The message in the image was perfect for my purposes as it reads, “wash your hands.” Another option would be just to type “wash your hands” or any other message that speaks to you in black letters and print it on glossy paper. I like how the image I found for this bathroom is gray and white as it matches the labels on the two dispensers. If you’re decorating a children’s bathroom, you could buy stick on letters in different colors matching the decor or print a photo of the child’s favorite cartoon, toy, or superhero.
There are so many ways to get creative with bathroom decor, but this is just a simple way to at least get started. It has character, a creative aspect, and adds a signature scent. If this isn’t your style, I hope it inspires some new ideas of your own. Have fun creating the perfect bathroom look that’s meant to make you proud and excites you the most!
One of the most amazing places I have ever visited is Thailand. Visiting this country felt like being in an entirely different world. From the moment my fiancé and I arrived at the airport in Bangkok, we knew that this experience was going to feel a bit unfamiliar. This was a great thing as I long for the unfamiliar from time to time. I recall asking the driver to take us to the only address we had any knowledge of and of course, that was the location of our hotel. He did not understand what we were trying to say entirely, but at least he was patient enough to figure out what we were trying to convey. My significant other and I chose to stay in the Chinatown area where we were greeted with warm, cleansing towels and a hot cup of tea. We felt pampered, relaxed, and as we were in great hands after such a long trip. Our flight was twenty-four hours to be exact and we were exhausted, yet willing to exchange only a bit of sleep before we’d take on the city and explore. This seemed fair as we had already traveled so far. As we settled into our hotel, we noticed that the vents permeated the air with an aromatic, spa-like, floral scent that sent us off into a much needed pleasant slumber.

Morning arrived and we were freshly filled with purpose and curiosity towards the unknown. Our plan was ambitious. We were going to cover as many monuments as possible and use minimal transportation since our goal was to walk throughout the city to experience as much as it had to offer. Our first monument was the Grand Palace. This palace is astonishing to say the least. Most of the buildings are decorated with colored glass while covered with gold leaf throughout. It’s quite the majestic vision and certainly one of a kind. Built in 1782, this palace boasts incredible, unparalleled architecture unquestionably built for a Thai king.
At The Grand Palace Admiring The Details
The atmosphere at the Grand Palace encompasses an air of whimsy combined with the opulent and regal. The gardens feature perfectly tailored details with little surprises at each turn. One can find majestic statues alongside more playful visual imagery. There’s a sense of peace throughout the grounds that connects to an era ages past. It’s this sense of quiet reminiscence that allows one to escape into one’s imagination and envision what may have been a long time ago. Despite the array of people it welcomes every day, visiting the Grand Palace still manages to feel like a unique and individual experience.

The Emerald Buddha Temple lies within the Grand Palace. This temple is to this day a sacred place of worship, therefore, it is prohibited to photograph beyond its walls. Tourists are allowed to enter, but must show respect. This means everyone must remove their shoes, cover their legs, and hide exposed shoulders before entering. Luckily, one can find pants and scarfs for sale at these sites to ensure appropriate coverage which make great souvenirs. Although, I bought a few of these scarfs, I opted to just throw a shirt over my dress I had packed for this specific occasion. I have to admit it was hot, but we experienced nothing less than sunshine. Our visit took place in February which is considered one of the best times of the year to travel to Thailand. I should mention that the rainy season takes place from June to October.

The next temple we visited was the Temple of the Reclining Buddha or Wat Pho. In this temple lies the statue of Buddha 43 meters long and 15 meters tall. The statue is quite impressive and elaborate within it’s design while it sits within beautifully decorated columns. I knelt before a monk at this site where water was sprinkled over my head as a ritualistic form of blessing. This act was followed by a small donation which entitled me to receive a white thread bracelet symbolizing protection and good health. This buddhist practice is called sai sin and the bracelets are previously blessed by a monk. I proudly wore my bracelet from the moment it was given to me as I optimistically awaited all the good fortune it was meant to ensue.

These two temples made up the majority of our first day in Thailand and after returning to our hotel and taking a much needed nap (thanks to our state of jet lag), it was time to experience some of Thailand’s best kept secret – its delicious cuisine! Okay, so it may not be an absolute secret to some, but the best authentic Thai food that one will ever encounter is, as expected, in Thailand. This country has some of the best dishes you’ll ever taste anywhere in the world as long as you enjoy spicy dishes. Luckily, the prices for a meal are wonderfully low. Once we were ready for dinner, it was time to search for the T & K Seafood Restaurant. We first heard of T & K from a YouTube video upon searching for great places to eat while visiting Thailand. To our surprise, this restaurant was only about three blocks from our hotel which we felt was a most serendipitous encounter. The food was excellent in case you were wondering. We had the tom yum soup and the snapper dish. They were both to die for and were paired with the local Thai beer, Singha, for a final touch.

Another temple we were able to visit was the Marble Temple. We rode a tuk-tuk to this location since it was a bit far from our hotel, although, it was on the agenda to experience this mode of transportation. Once our tuk-tuk bucket list had been checked, we experienced this next site. The exterior of this temple is made of marble as suggested by its name. This includes the large center terrace and all the columns throughout the building quarters. The Marble Temple is quite a magnificent structure and a definite site to see. One can find monks in this temple praying within its grand space.

The last temple on the agenda was Wat Saket also known as The Golden Mount. Arriving at this temple requires a bit of a hike up a winding set of stairs. Once at the top of this temple, the views are phenomenal and lend themselves for some spectacular photos. There’s a row of several large bells that one can ring to secure future good luck. I rang most of them to my heart’s contentment.

This concludes my temple adventure throughout Bangkok. Visiting this city was quite an experience that I recommend. From its people to the cuisine, I believe that Bangkok is definitely worth the visit. My fiancé and I were engaged during this trip so maybe there will be some other surprises in store for you.
I often ask myself, how can I help others? Sometimes the answer is just as simple as asking a friend who might need a hand and other times the answer is a bit more ambitious, complex, and unclear in nature.
It’s not uncommon for me to try all things that can bring fulfillment into my life and that of others. Those who know me well would describe me as creative and adventurous, hence my delving into all kinds of projects and creative endeavors. One question I never ask after meeting others is what they do for a living. I find that question often times is irrelevant. I’m more interested in people themselves. I think life is too short to think in a narrow-minded way and define ourselves and others based on what we see or what we do for a living. People are multi-dimensional. We have different thoughts, strengths, and gifts which are specific to us and stem from the way we have learned to see the world. Our different experiences give some of us an upper hand, but that’s not to say that we can’t all contribute to a new way of doing or seeing things. Some people have passion for what they do, but many more are passionate about hobbies they partake in on their spare time.
In my case, I love all things that involve a creative aspect. For instance, I have been writing music for pleasure since I was nine years old and have probably written over two hundred songs since then. My natural talents stem from a father who is incredibly adventurous and musically talented as well. One could say, I take after him. For some reason, music came easily and naturally to me despite the lack of any formal training. My parents noticed that I could play the piano and write songs without taking lessons which led to many musical creations from my end. In addition, I somehow could innately read sheet music from the moment I was introduced to it. That’s when it became clear to my parents that I was meant to take piano lessons to improve my craft. That only lasted a year as I became bored with the process.
Once in college, I decided to teach myself how to play the guitar since I couldn’t take the piano with me as it was a bit too cumbersome. The guitar was a bit more mobile and sexier in my opinion. Once I figured out the guitar and composed a few songs, I auditioned for a band in college and became the lead singer which prompted my fifteen minutes of fame around campus. I should mention that this audition was choreographed by my best friend who has always been one of my biggest fans and I love her for it! She has always been so encouraging of my life explorations and adventures which makes her one lucky friend to have in my life.
A few years later, upon entering medical school, I wrote many more songs as a stress relief. I posted YouTube videos of my original songs for my friends to listen to, gave informal concerts in the school lounge, took requests to amuse the other frustrated students, and provided a much needed musical escape. Eventually, due to popular demand, I created an album on iTunes. If you’re interested in checking it out, it’s titled, “Beyond Words,” (and yes, that’s my shameless plug). All songs, melodies, and the guitar parts are original.
Beyond Words by Shirley Marcano
Since I’m no stranger to re-inventing myself, I decided to become an interior decorator and start my own business after working part-time for a large company doing just that. Although creative within itself, I felt I wasn’t reaching a large enough audience where I could share my talents. I’m most excited when I’m creating and educating others about things they might want to learn about. Instagram and this blog have given me a much needed outlet where I can share new things including my ideas with those who are interested in learning.
Some other creative projects I’ve partaken in have involved other forms of writing which I truly enjoy. Last year, I wrote a children’s book and created the illustrations, but have not submitted it to be published yet. I wrote another children’s book a few days ago and I’m just waiting on the illustrations which I’m hoping my brother, who is a 3-D animator, will collaborate on with me on his spare time. I plan on sending that book to a publisher to test my luck and skills so if you have it in you, please wish me luck. In addition, there’s a third book in the making which I have so far managed to write seventy pages of, but it will take me a little longer to finish since it’s not a children’s book.
The latest project I’m working on is related to health considering my medical background. I’m happy to share that I have been asked to collaborate with another company to create and provide educational content that will benefit children in hospitals. I’m excited about this project because it will allow me to combine my creativity with my medical knowledge to serve a greater purpose that could potentially impact many. I’m currently exploring ideas to better suit the needs of this endeavor and needless to say, I’m humbled at the opportunity and to be considered for such a great cause.
I hope my story so far has inspired some of you to take a look at your talents and see where you may be able to make an impact. At the very least, explore what drives you and brings you happiness. We are meant to connect in ways that will serve one another and sometimes in the process, you might find that you have discovered a new fulfilling side of life. It’s always about the journey and what’s yet to be discovered ahead or, in some cases, simply lies around the corner.
Get Creative And Elevate The Look Of Your Home With Patterns
One of the greatest challenges for many when it comes to decor is the use of patterns. There are a few rules that you can apply to help you achieve this look flawlessly. They’re fairly simple and will save you from making some decorating mistakes.
First, choose a color scheme that will work with the room, sofa color, bed, bench, or chair where you will be placing the pillows. Also, consider the wall color, flooring, drapes (pattern and color), area rugs, and artwork in the room. The colors should either tie into the sofa, chair, etc. or complement it in some way with the rest of the room. The key is to use unifying colors even if they are of varying shades within the same color family. This will ensure that one’s eye will not wander and lose focus of the look you’re trying to create. A similar color scheme, even if monochromatic, will portray harmony within the different patterns.
The same unifying theme with a separate accent color can finish the look. In the picture above, notice that within the varying shades of gray, the lumbar pillow features a mustard-yellow which differs from the neutral color scheme throughout the pillows which are beige, ivory, and gray. The purpose of this is to add a “pop” of color. This is what breaks up the monotony of the neutral color scheme in this particular case. Without this additional color, the pillows would look incredibly boring. The accent color doesn’t necessarily have to have a pattern since it can just be a solid color pillow. The key in this case is to make sure to add the same accent color with a throw or with a work of art that includes that color to tie it all in and complete the look.
Herringbone throws such as the one featured are great for adding not only pattern, but texture to a room. The small scale of the herringbone pattern itself allows the decor to introduce yet another pattern that is more subdued yet permitting the patterns on the pillows to make a more profound statement. Throw blankets add a homey feel to any room and make it look more inviting. The key is to make sure that they are in line with the pillows added to the room. However, they should not be the same as all the pillows because it leaves the room devoid of visual interest.
As a general rule, designers operate by the rule of three’s. This means that an odd number of pillows is your best bet in elevating your home aesthetics to a more designer look. Instead of two pillows, use three or five and ensure that one has pattern or a different solid color to avoid a drab look. Often times, people will accessorize their sofas, love seats, or sectionals with just two pillows (one on each end) and maybe a throw blanket all in the same style. This is a common mistake, but luckily it’s one easily corrected. By just adding that third pillow to break up the monotony, you can create a more inviting and visually interesting look.
Pattern And Stripes
Another challenge for some is the use of stripes in their decor. Stripes can add a sophisticated look when combined with a pattern. The thicker the stripes are, the bolder the look and the bigger the statement even when featured as in the above image with neutral colors. You can even combine stripes with a check pattern as long as there’s a solid or pattern pillow in between the two.
The key to mixing patterns, stripes, and solid colors is finding a balance usually by using a similar color palette. If you follow these simple designer rules, you’ll already be at the top of your design game. I hope these few guidelines give you a better sense of how to create an interesting visual space within your home. In addition, I hope they help dissipate any fear you may have had regarding the use of pattern on pattern. I can assure you these insider tips will enhance the aesthetics of your home and give you the look you’ve been striving to achieve. When decorating, don’t be afraid to try different things and make it your own as each space should reflect our individuality, personalities, and the best of our creativity.
Take a closer look at your friends. Who are the ones who are supporting you while you pursue your dreams or even have a vision? Who are the ones who genuinely care about what you’re doing and choose to encourage you to help you grow or at least let you know that they believe in you rather than make faces at each other when you speak about yourself or propose an idea? These are important questions one should ask to create meaningful relationships and let go of those that don’t serve us. There are many self-proclaimed experts who will speak without knowing about any given topic even after no understanding or experience regarding the matter at hand. True leaders listen, learn, and provide helpful insight into situations. They never judge, but instead try to gain a different perspective.
I’ve come across a lot of people in my lifetime and have intuitively been able to discern which of the people who come into my life are genuine and which ones are not. This doesn’t mean I don’t give people a chance to prove me wrong, but in my experience, gut instinct has not failed me. As someone who often wears her heart on her sleeve and chooses to be honest, I find it troublesome every time I come across people who are the exact opposite. I, also, find that these people generally have no true friends due to the walls they have created for themselves. Whether it’s based on their own insecurities and lack of life purpose, it’s a real travesty and I feel for them because they will only be able to develop superficial relationships. People like that will always doubt you because they only have doubt in their hearts for themselves. It is important to remember that others can only provide what they have to give and if they have no goals, they will never envision you achieving yours. If you aren’t sure who those friends are, take a quick look at something as simple as your social media and see how many times they have “liked” the great things you have accomplished, experienced, or posted while they approve of anything else that’s only mundane.
Align Yourself With People Who Find Value In What You Do.
Just last night I had a conversation with a fellow friend and entrepreneur. In the few hours we spoke, I learned so much about him and about myself. All very positive things. This person has an ambition and drive that I admire. He not only challenges himself, but he creates an environment where others can do the same. He provides tools, ideas, and resources in exchange for a better life for those who come into his. His cause resonates with mine as I’ve often tried to help and encourage others throughout my life. I believe that selflessness achieves more for all than having a selfish cause. I started this blog because I have many ideas I’d like to share and others I’d like to see come to fruition. On the same note, I believe in the philosophy expressed by the movie, “Field Of Dreams,” when they said, “If you build it, they will come.”
As my friend and I discussed how we could put our minds together and make a difference, he revealed how he saw in me the innate qualities that I often strive to portray and live by for my sake and that of others. This was a very humbling experience as we generally don’t know how others view us in respect to how we wish to be seen. I can only expect great things to come by aligning myself with positive and driven people like him who aim at making this world a better place. I just hope you too can find and get to know people who respect you and will bring out the best in you.
